Absolute Dating Methods - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 2 Words: 471 Downloads: 6 Date added: 2017/09/22 Category Advertising Essay Type Narrative essay Did you like this example? Absolute dating methods are used to determine the age of materials. We need to understand how fossils are made so we can date them properly. There are five ways bones are fossilized. They are by permineralization, unaltered preservation, carbonization, authigenic preservation, and recrystalization (Shepherd). When a fossil is found you need to make sure that it can be preserved properly so it can stay in the same shape to enable research. Many steps are taken to prepare fossils and conserve them. Hardeners are used to protect against deterioration, adhesives are used to put all the pieces together, and there is a lot of mechanical preparation to clean the fossil. After the fossil is well cleaned you can examine it accurately (Paleontological Resources For Fossil Collectors). You also always have to be careful when you are handling fossils because they are often very fragile and can be damaged very easily. When you determine the age of materials by their radioactive content it is called radiometric dating. Radiometric age-dating is based on the fact that every radioactive element decays. The original or ââ¬Å"parentâ⬠element emits radiation and particles until the loss thereof transforms it into a stable ââ¬Å"daughterâ⬠element. A series of transformations into other radio-active elements marks its unparalleled pattern and rate of decay until it reaches stability (Think Quest). â⬠ââ¬Å"The decay of radioactive elements occurs at different rates, depending on the specific isotope. These rates are stated in terms of half-lives. One half-life is the amount of time required for ? of the original atoms in a sample to decay (ONeil). â⬠Radiometric methods provide one of the most important ways to date fossils. The main types of radiometric dating are Potassium-argon, carbon-14 or radiocarbon, thermoluminescence, and electron-spin-resonance. Potassium-argon dating is used for dating volcanic rocks associated with fossil material. It can date better for older specimens but when used for younger specimens it can give a wrong date. You have to be careful and use the right method for the selected specimen. Carbon-14 dating is ââ¬Å"based on an unstable isotope of carbon that living animals and plants incorporate into their cells. â⬠This method is used for dating younger fossils under the age of 40,000 years old. If it is used for older fossils the date will be inaccurate. Thermoluminescence dating measures high energy nuclear particles traveling through rock. This method covers the area that potassium-argon and carbon-14 miss. Electron-spin-resonance dating is used to date an inorganic component of tooth enamel by the trapped electrons (Boyd and Silk). Both thermoluminescence dating and electron-spin-resonance dating fill the area potassium-argon dating and carbon-14 dating miss. Some religious fundamentalists see all the fossils and dating methods as inaccurate. They have different views as to how they got there and their ages. Not everyone believes that evolution occurred and some believe that scientists are making it all up. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Absolute Dating Methods" essay for you Create order

How Does Anne Change Throughout Persuasion Essay Example
How Does Anne Change Throughout Persuasion? Paper This shows her position within her family and how she must be treated by them, also indicating the reasons for her low self-esteem and nervous manner. This situation Is also mirrored by Students style within the first few chapters, where she concentrates her description on Walter and Elizabeth Elliot, further showing Ann.s Inferiority within her own family. Despite this Lady Russell pollen of Anne is very different, as It was only In Anne that she could fancy the mother to revive again, showing that deep inside Anne there was a much ore confident and lively woman looking to break free, but struggling to do so. The major turning point in the novel is during Ann.s trip to Lame and following Louisa accident, it is during this incident that Ann.s true self finally breaks free and that her companions are able to see the real Anne. The first example of this is immediately after Louisa fall when Anne cries for heavens sake go to him. I can support her myself. Leave me, and go to him. Rub her hands, rub her temples; here are salts, take them, take them. This sudden outbreak of control and strength is quite unlike the Anne that Austin had so far described, but shows that In truth Ann.s character has not been explored to Its limits by this stage, and this Is proven by the surprise and disorientation of her acquaintances who rely on her Instructions to deal with the situation. The comparison here is clear, Anne Is reliable and calm whereas the rest of the party fall into a state of hysterical agitations. At this point we see that Anne is clearly much more resilient and determined than one would have guessed from her faded and thin appearance and tenderness of manner, she is a prime example of not Judging a book by its cover. Ann.s display of intelligence and composure at Lame becomes pivotal in her transformation, which is catalysts throughout the novel by her increased rebellion against her family and her development into her own person. Although not actually mentioned, Ann.s development goes show these signs, particularly as she grows more confident and begins answering back to her father. Overall, by time her transformation is nearly complete, Anne NAS Decode a very Deterrent person. Foremost, nerd polls Ana convection are much improved as she defies her father, No, Sir, she is not one and thirty; but I do not think I can put off my engagement, when requested to meet with Lady Dillydally. Furthermore, Austin hints that Anne even appears better and that her newly found confidence and vigor makes her less thin in her person, in her cheeks, re skin, her complexion, greatly improved-clearer, fresher, an observation unsurprisingly made by Sir Walter. Of course, Ann.s only true role in life was to uphold her family name and to acquaint herself with Englands aristocracy. This also included finding herself a husband and starting a family which could be as auspicious and distinguished as her own. Therefore, her new lease of life was certainly an advantage in this pursuit and naturally she began to attract the attention of various eligible bachelors. Remarkably, revises to her change, she was unattached, taken for granted and at the age of twenty seven had very few romantic prospects. Interestingly her first encounter with Captain Wentworth at Prosperous was largely uneventful and later Mary explains to Anne that Captain Wentworth felt Anne to be so altered he should not have known you again, showing how he was quite comfortable seeing her again and not at all embarrassed. On the other hand, after spending so much time with her in Lame and Prosperous, Captain Wentworth expression is very different when meeting her in Bath after the incident with Louisa. On this occasion he was less at ease than formerly and was feeling much more embarrassed and stunned by the meeting. However, more likely is that Captain Wentworth was able to see the same woman that he had fallen in love with, before she was persuaded by Lady Russell, before she had dissolved into the background. The reason that the second meeting was so different was not because time had changed him, or Louisa had changed him as Anne suggests, but because she had changed and thus rekindled all of his feelings for her. Moreover, Anne had also been taken to by Mr.. Elliot who thought her a most extraordinary young woman; in her temper, manners, mind, a model of female excellence. Lastly, her evolution also made her much more noticeable amongst other people than previously, where she was no more than a wallflower. For example, Captain Wentworth acquaintances state that she is pretty, I think; Anne Elliot; very pretty, when one comes to look at her. It is not the fashion to say so, but I confess that I admire her more than her sister.

Individualized Education Programs That Support Self Esteem
Individualized Education Programs That Support Self Esteem Self-esteem has fallen from the pinnacle of academic and scientific practice.Ã There is not necessarily a direct link between self-esteem and academic success. Resilience is getting a great deal of attention because the culture of coddling children for fear of injuring their self-esteem often discourages them from risk-taking, which has been shown to be related to success in school and life. Still, children with disabilities do need some extra attention paid to activities that will build their ability to take those risks, whether we call that resilience or self-esteem.Ã Self Esteem and Writing Positive Goals for IEPs The IEP, or Individualized Education Program- the document that defines the students special education program- should attend to ways in which instruction is mediated and success is measured that will enhance a childs self-confidence and lead to further success.Ã Certainly, these activities need to reinforce the kind of academic behavior you want, while at the same time pairing the childs sense of self-worth to success in school activities. If you are writing an IEP to ensure that your students will be successful, you will want to make sure that your goals are based on the students past performance and that they are stated positively. Goals and statements must be relevant to the students needs. Start slowly, choosing only a couple of behaviors at a time to change. Be sure to involve the student, this enables him/her to take responsibility and be accountable for his/her own modifications. Be sure to provide some time to enable the student to track and or graph his/her successes. Accommodations to Develop and Enhance Self-Esteem: Academic expectations will be reduced to ensure success. Be very specific about the exact curricular expectations that will be omitted or modified. Recognize and reward quality performance.Student strengths will be highlighted by recording and sharing evidence of growth.Honest and appropriate feedback will occur on a regular basis.Opportunities for the student to demonstrate strengths will be maximized as often as is possible. This could include, oral presentation and opportunities for the child to share his responses as long as the child is ready and can be successful. The student will be encouraged to become involved in extracurricular activities that support his/her interests and strengths. The student will use a form of personal expression which will include teacher response/feedback through a journal, one to one, or computer entries. Goal-Writing Tips Write goals that can be measured, be specific as to the duration or the circumstance under which the goal will be implemented and use specific time slots when possible. Remember, once the IEP is written, it is imperative that the student is taught the goals and fully understands what the expectations are. Provide him/her with tracking devices, students need to be accountable for their own changes.

Exploring Presidental elections and Presidental Power between Research Paper
Exploring Presidental elections and Presidental Power between President Ronald Reagan and President Barack Obama - Research Paper Example During his reign, his administration concluded an important treaty with Soviet Union in order to restrict the intermediate range for nuclear weapons conducted in a proxy war with Nicaragua through the services it offered on the contras. Thus, it invaded the grenade ostensibly to prevent the Soviet Island from becoming an outpost of the Soviet. In 1984, Reagan was re-elected by a huge margin back to the white house. This paper will analyze the presidential powers of Reagan during his reign as the president of the US. Reaganââ¬â¢s taking office that was ushered shortly in his popular acceptance for supply of the side economics both with bellicosity abroad and at home. He was given a political honeymoon after an unsuccessful assassination attempts in 1981. The democrats in the north and the south supported President Reaganââ¬â¢s domestic policy (Cannon 33-35). He therefore instituted a program that focused on phasing out taxes and increasing expenditures on defense of the governme nt. Furthermore, education and welfare budgets were cut, and unanimously accepted, by the congress (Lawson 38). This was a deregulation program of business and a measure of tightening control of information concerned about the government. During his reign, Reaganââ¬â¢s staff contemplated on legislation of the British secret acts until they realized that loyalty was paramount for the detection of the lies. In the foreign policy, other countries were alarmed due to the frank nature of the triumphant of the American rhetoric and determination of the administration in imposing the leadership in America and its priorities. He used his position as the president to pressure for the catapulted movement of the NATO in to order increase expenditures on military. For instance, Reagan affronted even Margaret a staunch supporter to sell grains to USSR to raise money to boost the military. This was like pleasing the agribusiness sector aimed at supporting the US subsidiaries companies that bas ed in Europe. He also managed to prevent Western Europe from importing natural gas, which Russia demanded. The fears of the nuclear weapons receded when Reagan agreed to limit his expenditure on arms talks with Russia and reduced on the tone of the bellicose rhetoric. This progress passed in a summit held in Geneva with Russian president Gorbachev. Reaganââ¬â¢s domestic policies of the US recessed the economy, which meant that his re-election was uncertain. In 1984 November, he got a huge margin of the votes than 1980 election. He exercised peace abroad and gained fame locally. Rituals and festivals Essay Example for Free
Rituals and festivals Essay Rituals and festivals have been a part of traditional European life for many years. They involved all religions, social classes and happened in almost all areas throughout Europe. Back in these times, there were no forms of entertainment like television, cell phones and video games. People depended on one another to entertain themselves. People in Europe would also be punished or tortured in front of the whole town to control public outbursts. An example of this is known as charivari. Some of these festivals and rituals were for political purposes too. Festivals and rituals of traditional European society mainly served as enjoyment, enforcement of public rules, and political purposes in daily life. Festivals and rituals were a type of fun and entertainment for Europeans. In a painting by Pieter Brueghel the Elder, it shows a picture of Europeans at a carnival, enjoying the days before Lent. Usually the days before lent people indulge themselves with alcohol. In the painting, it shows a man wearing a robe with a bucket as a crown of thorns and a stick as his cane. Jesus Christ is being mocked by representing the violence of Lent. This shows that the people are just enjoying the carnival because they are mocking their ruler (Wikipedia). The picture also shows people running around with drinks and food and also playing games with each other (Doc. 3). In a document by R. Lassels, a French traveler, he comments on Italian Carnival customs. He states ââ¬Å"All this festival activity is allowed the Italians that they may give a little vent to their spirits, which have been stifled for a whole year and are ready to choke with gravity and melancholyâ⬠(Doc. 5). Since Lassels is from France, it means he really does not know Italians. So the fact that he said that the Italians really enjoy festivals is true because he could tell when he saw them at the carnival since he does not really know them (POV). In a comment made by Baltasar Rusow, a Lutheran pastor, he talks about the saintââ¬â¢s feast day festival. In one part of his comment, he states ââ¬Å"Around these bonfires people danced, sang and leapt with great pleasure, and did not spare the bagpipesâ⬠(Doc. 2). This quote shows that the Europeans were enjoying the festival. Baltasar Rusow is a Lutheran pastor, so since it was the saintââ¬â¢s day feast, he probably was there so he saw first-hand how happy the Europeans actually were (POV). Festivals and rituals let Europeans forget all the bad and have fun with each other. When someone did something wrong in a town, the whole village would come and punish them too. In aà stang song from Lincolnshire England, they talked about a man who beat his wife and what they did to him. The song reads ââ¬Å"Old Abram Higback has been beating his good woman; but he neither told her for what or for why, but he up with his fist, and blackened her eye. Now all ye old women, and old women kind, get together and be of a mind; collar him and take him to the out-house, and shove him in. Now if that does not mend his manners, then take his skin to the tannersâ⬠(Doc. 9). This shows that if one person is in trouble or was being abused, the whole town would help you get payback. If there were no rituals then he would have gotten away with it. There were also rituals such as charivari that punished Europeans for crimes. Charivari is also known as riding stang. A Russian official wrote about a woman who was ill after her punishment. He stated ââ¬Å"A village policemen brought her before the village assembly, where they hung on her neck the basket of berries she had gathered, and the entire commune led her through the village streets with shout, laughter, songs, and dancing to the noise of washtubs, frying pans, and bellsâ⬠(Doc. 10). Since the man was the officer that wrote the report, he may have been bias because he may have stretched the truth to make the situation worse than it actually was (POV). If there was not any ritual of punishment, the lady may have done it again. It shows the rest of the people what will happen to them if they commit a similar crime. Punishments for offenses and crimes were often public and embarrassing. Charivari was a very scary thing for a person. Elizabeth Gaskell, an English author, talked about a woman who forced to ride stang after abusing the other sex. She said ââ¬Å"They hunt the delinquent and mount her on their horse astride with her face to the tail. So they parade her through the nearest village or town, drowning her scolding and clamour with the noise of frying pans, just as you would scare a swarm of beesâ⬠(Doc. 8). The purpose of riding was embarrassment. It makes an impact on the suspect and the rest of the town. This allowed the people in the town to enforce laws. Europeans also used rituals and festivals to help support political ideas. A man named Giovanni di Carlo, a Dominican monk, wrote about when rich fathers and their sons would switch positions so the sons will know what to do when they are older. Giovanni says ââ¬Å"their very sons had put on their clothes and the sons had learned all of their gestures, copying each and every one ofà their actions and habits in an admirable wayâ⬠(Doc. 1). The sons learn everything about their father, even the clothes they wear. It gives the father a chance to know what the sons go through and the sons to know how their fatherââ¬â¢s lives are. If this ritual was not in place, then the sons wouldnââ¬â¢t know what to expect when they are older or they wouldnââ¬â¢t have been able to bond with their dad. Henry Bourne, a man from Great Britain, commented on the rituals in the Scilly Islands. Henry states ââ¬Å"The servant and his master are alike and everything is done with an equal freedomâ⬠(Doc. 6). Since Henry is not from Scilly Bourne, he does not know for sure if the servants are treated fairly, making his point bias (POV). This quote shows that the king treats his servant like family because it is a ritual. A police inspector from Toulouse, France showed that certain festivals or arguments had a specific goal. The police officer said ââ¬Å"When a royalist widower of the Couteliers neighborhood remarried, he began receiving raucous visits night after night. Most people who took too active a part were sent to the police court. But that sort of prosecution was not very intimidatingâ⬠(Doc. 7). This quote is saying that people really respect rituals and customs and if someone is going to break them they will be punished. People really cared about rituals and used festivals and punishment to show that they need to be followed. Festivals and rituals of traditional European society mainly served as enjoyment, enforcement of public rules, and political purposes in daily life.

Cocos nucifera Essay -- Botany
Cocos nucifera Cocos nucifera is the scientific name of the common coconut. This very tall palm tree is always an inviting symbol of the tropics. The plant is one of the most valuable plants to man. It is a primary source of food, drink, and shelter. In Sanskrit the coconut palm is called "kalpa vriksha", which is defined as "the tree which provides all the necessities of life." Man can use every part of the coconut. The white nut-meat can be eaten raw or shredded and dried and used in most cooking recipes. A single coconut has as much protein as a quarter pound of beefsteak. Copra, the dried meat of the kernels, when crushed is the source of coconut oil. The husks, known as coir, is a short, coarse, elastic fibers used to make an excellent thatch roofing material for houses. This very diverse plant is also an excellent charcoal, which is produced from the shells, not only does it work as a cooking fuel, but also in the production of gas masks and air filters. The outer part of the trunk of the coconut palm furnishes, a construction lumber, known as porcupine wood for houses and furniture. The swollen base of the trunk, when hollowed, can be turned into a hula drum that the Hawaiians use for entertainment. These are just a few examples of how extraordinary the coconut palm can be utilized. The coconut was first mentioned in 545 AD by an Egyptian Monk named Cosmos Indicopleustes. He visited western India and Ceylon. In his "Topographia Christiana", Cosmos describes the coconut as the "great nut of India." The Mahavasma, an ancient chronological history of Ceylon, describes the planting of coconuts in that country in 589 AD. In 1280 Marco Polo, described coconut growing in Sumatra, as well as in Madras and Malabar... ...aried utilization of the coconut will always be important in the economic aspect. Raw Copra used to be the major export but as coconut oil is becoming more widely used its export is increasing. Another change is the export of coconuts in the shell to the exporting of desiccated coconut. Both of these changes have benefited the countries of origin by creating more employment in the tropics. The coconut has been a growing success since the time it was first discovered and to this day this very diverse plant is still showing great potential. REFERENCES Child, Reginald. Bicycle Theives: the Unspoken Allure of Communism
Bicycle Thieves: The Unspoken Allure of Communism Bicycle Thieves is an exemplary demonstration of Italian neorealism that seeks to use non-professional actors to illustrate the struggle of average people surviving under a Fascist government. De Sica's use of film techniques such as close-ups heightens the effect of his neo-realist aesthetic, especially seen in his street-level depictions of Rome in the aftermath of World War II. The poverty and despair captured by De Sica's cinematography and narrative choices illustrates that capitalism has failed the Italian people, providing them only with grinding poverty and inward despair.By focusing on the mundane details of a simple man's life, rather than a narrative involving high drama, the film effectively captures the humiliating effects of class disparity while highlighting the role that communism could play in the improvement of life for the Italian people, if only a sense of community could be established. Director Vittorio De Sica u ses Bicycle Thieves as a vehicle in which to stress the burdens faced by the individual in a heartless and uncaring society. He has stated that his aesthetic intention with the film was to ââ¬Å"reintroduce the dramatic into quotidian situations, the marvellous in a little news item [â⬠¦ ] considered by most people throwaway materialâ⬠(Cheshire), and so too is his main character, Antonio, a throwaway person. As an unemployed person, he has no value to the larger society and no apparent worth to his family as a provider. It is only once he secures a position as a poster-hanger that he begins to see himself as a productive member of society.De Sica illustrates the importance of this job by demonstrating Antonio's increasing desperation when his bicycleââ¬âan item he cannot do his job withoutââ¬âis stolen. His neorealistic style stems more from moral imperative than from necessity because, as critic Godfrey Cheshire notes in ââ¬Å"Bicycle Thieves: A Passionate Commit ment to the Real,â⬠the film was not shot in the low-budget style associated with neorealism, and instead was ââ¬Å"mounted by a team of movie professionals working on a budget generous enough to allow for large-scale scenes, hundreds of extras, and even the apparatus necessary to create a fake ainstormâ⬠(Cheshire). However, De Sica manages to retain an atmosphere of true realism that is heightened by scenes carefully chosen to display Antonio's quick downward spiral as he and his son ultimately fail to recover the lost bicycle. This devastating loss propels Antonio into a life of crime, demonstrating that under an uncaring government and without social support, the poor have no choice but to hurt each other for lack of a better outlet, and that those who are stolen from eventually become thieves as well. De Sica creates drama and illustrates his point by putting his protagonist in an unwinnable situation.Although Antonio has been offered a job, he can only take it if he has a bicycle. Due to financial circumstances, the bicycle has been pawned. In this way, De Sica establishes the character of Antonio's wife, Maria, who agrees to pawn their bed sheets to pay for the bicycle. This demonstrates that material comfort is secondary to the security that will come with stable employment. The actors themselves play a huge role in successfully portraying De Sica's message, and he sticks to the requirements of neorealism by using only non-professional actors. As film theorist Andre Bazin states, ââ¬Å"none [of the actors] had the slightest experience in theatre or film. The workman came from the Breda factory, the child was found hanging around in the street, the wife was a journalistâ⬠(Bazin). An added level of realism can be found in using average people with faces that show the effects of time and experience. In his essay, ââ¬Å"Bicycle Thieves: Ode to the Common Man. â⬠Charles Burnett notes the effect of De Sica's choice to use non-professi onal actors, writing that ââ¬Å"their faces are so expressive [â⬠¦ ] they seem to be playing themselvesâ⬠(Burnett). To further this realism, the director takes a similar approach with his background players. For example, in the pawn shop scene the director captures an elderly man with a tired, lined face who is trying, without success, to pawn a pair of binoculars. His expressiveness makes the scene seem more real, squalid, and filled with pain, while also illustrating that the Ricci family are not alone in their poverty. Indeed, the upwards panning shot that displays a towering pile of pawned sheets just like the set that Maria is exchanging for the bicycle, overwhelmingly shows the terrible effect of unrestrained capitalism on the poor.To further show the damage caused by a social and governmental system that doesn't value human needs, De Sica characterizes the upper class as the true villains of the piece. This is seen very clearly while Antonio is fruitlessly searching the stalls filled with disassembled bicycle parts while a good-looking young man blows bubbles into the air, filled with self-satisfaction and utterly unaware of Antonio's total terror. Symbolically, the bicycles can represent both the destruction of his ability to earn a living wage, and his own mental breakdown in having to confront the loss of such a vital mode of transportation. In this scene, also, a pedophile tries to lure Antonio's son, Bruno, into his clutches. Although the scene is populated with passerby, nobody pays any mind to the dangers faced by the vulnerable boy, let alone steps forward to offer assistance. By showing the oblivion of the group, De Sicoemphasizes the isolation of the individual, as well as demonstrating that no one, not even small children, are safe from the avaricious nature of the rich in a society where, as Burnett writes, ââ¬Å"the predators are the rich and disconnectedâ⬠(Burnett). The gripping conclusion of Bicycle Thieves further demonstr ates how the need to secure employment in order to survive can cause honest people to behave in a dishonest manner. De Sico uses a shot of Antonio sitting outside of a football stadium, hungrily eyeing countless parked bicycles; a temptation that is akin to showing a starving man a plate of food. Through the director's use of close-up shots of Antonio's pained expression, we experience his inner turmoil as morality fights with his baser needs. The climax occurs when he finally tries to steal a bicycle outside of an apartment building and is caught by a group of men who taunt and abuse while Bruno watches in horror. Cheshire writes that this point marks ââ¬Å"where Antonio's solitary ordeal reaches a humiliatingly public climaxâ⬠(Cheshire), and indeed it is a fitting conclusion for a film that has taken place entirely in the public environment of Rome.By making use of the city streets as his set, and the city's population as his background cast, De Sico manages to show all of t he missed opportunities where Antonio's life could have been changed for the better, were someone to have only taken an interest in his plight. As Bazin states in ââ¬Å"Neorealism and Pure Cinema: The Bicycle Thieves,â⬠ââ¬Å"the thesis implied is wondrously and outrageously simple: in the world where this workman lives, the poor must steal from each other in order to survive. But this thesis is never stated as such, it is just that events are so linked together that they have the appearance of a formal truth while retaining an anecdotal qualityâ⬠(Bazin). In such a manner, the irony of Antonio's predicament remains subtle, left for the viewer to determine based on their own experiences and observations. De Sico's film is most notable for what it avoids saying about the benefits of communism when held up against a corrupt, bloated style of capitalism that treats the working person as fodder for a greater machine.Rather than treat Bicycle Thieves as a propaganda device for his opinions, the director instead allows the audience to draw their own conclusions based on the realistic information he has provided to them. But the implication of Antonio's struggle is clear: community support is vital for the individual to survive under difficult circumstances. Without a collective group from which to seek solace and assistance in times of trouble, the individual is left as aimless and panicked as Antonio during his solitary and unsuccessful attempt to retrieve his stolen bicycle.Works Cited Bazin, Andre. ââ¬Å"Neorealism and Pure Cinema: The Bicycle Thieves. â⬠Theory Kit. 21 October 2007. Creative Commons - America Needs Fair Use Licenses Itââ¬â¢s likely happened to you before, you turn on your radio, or favorite music video network and begin listening to a song by some hot new pop starlet, hip-hop superstar, or aging rocker. The beat is catchy, inviting, and oddly familiar, almost too familiar in fact. Who is this Vanilla Ice guy and why is he rapping over it?â⬠If you were old enough to remember Under Pressure and subsequently were listening Ice Ice Baby in 1990 (likely while cruising in your Mustang 5.0 convertible on your way to a Milli Vanilli concert), you would have experienced anâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Thankfully, a solution called Creative Commons has been developed which addresses many of these issues in an effort to encourage new creative development through the open sharing of intellectual property. Smiley is a man who was released back into the society on a parole. He was sent back to live in his neighborhood. Shinichi Suzuki, a famous Japanese violinist who invented Suzuki Method, got the right idea of Smileyââ¬â¢s situation when he said ââ¬Å"Man is a child of his environmentâ⬠. It means that Smiley is a product of his environment. His neighborhood is a no picnic. The neighborhood is a basically a graveyard of American dreams. Like everyone else in America, Smiley values individualism, achievement, money, and family unity highly. However he is in a hostile society where his rough background is rejected and regarded as a stigma. He does not have education or an escape from his neighborhood where people are under a great strain. The reasonâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Regina had problems after being set free like Smiley. Regina is a mother who was struggling with her addiction to meth and drinking. She was sent to the prison for stealing money. There are several possible criminal theories that may explain her criminal history. She started doing petty crimes and did some drugs at first but then she experienced no serious consequences of her actions. She felt so alive with drugs and stolen money made her rich. In other words, she continued to break laws because she experienced no deterrence for her actions. A theory called rational choice (Shelden, Brown, Miller Fritzler, 2008) became popular in 1970ââ¬â¢s and 1980ââ¬â¢s which said that people may sometimes make wrong choices because of illogical reasons (p. 71). People may not have insufficient information, resources, or bad moral values that make them think not rationally. Regina got her moral values from her friends who felt it is okay to do drugs to deal with the life. However this theory follows hedonistic calculus (p. 71) which means that Regina freely chose to do drugs because she wanted pleasure and avoid pain. She was not thinking long term consequences of her addiction and she only focused on getting high. Essay on The Life of Henry Ford - 1440 Words
The Life of Henry Ford Henry Ford once said, ââ¬Å"I will build a motorcar for the massesâ⬠¦constructed of the best materials, by the best me to be hired, after the simplest designs that modern engineering can deviseâ⬠¦so low in price that no man making a good salary will be unable to own one and enjoy with his family the blessing of hours of pleasure in Godââ¬â¢s great open spaces.â⬠(Willamette 1) This is one of his most memorable yet earliest public quotes in history, that can easily sum up his whole life. Ford was much more than a person who made cars. Henry Ford was born on July 30, 1863 on a farm near Greenfield Michigan where he lived a normal childhood. At thirteen years old Ford became obsessed with theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Ford not only wished for every middle class family to afford a car but he also wanted his workers to have a car too (Jarold 1). That was why he wanted so badly to make a car at a price so that everyone could afford it (Iacocca 1). After many numer ous attempts to accomplish this goal Ford would say, ââ¬Å" Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.â⬠(Lacey 65) This kind of attitude led Henry Ford to create the Model T in 1908.Henry Ford could have expanded his business and make many types of cars, but he chose to only make one for mass production. He did this because he knew that the cars would not only be cheaper, but the more cars that were made the more the price would drop. The purpose of the price reduction was to give everyone an opportunity to own a car. Ford did this unselfishly and his company never lost a dime (Jarold 1). He was once quoted saying, ââ¬Å" A business that makes nothing but money is a poor kind of business (Willamette 5).â⬠Even though Henry Ford sold over 15 million Model Tââ¬â¢s over the next two decades, his happiness came from seeing the peopleââ¬â¢s response to him (Caldwell 48). Information Security U.S. E-commerce Website
Question: Discuss about the Information Security for U.S. E-commerce Website. Answer: Part A Acer's e-commerce website hit by a customer data breach Introduction In this part of the report, it will describe in detail a news story related to computer security breach in the month amid April to August 2016. It will discuss about the actual problem that the company faced and who all were the victims to the attack. It will also discuss about the attack procedure how it may have been carried out and what all could be the preventive measures in future ahead. Problem Statement ACER, a Taiwanese MNC, famous for its hardware and electronics, suffered security breach of its U.S. e-commerce website, which left its customers confidential information exposed who made any purchase from the site in the last one year. The number of users and clients affected by the attack has not been stated yet but in a draft letter sent by company to all its customers says that they are taking every possible measure to remediate this security issue and are even taking help of cyber-security experts from outside. In an article published by Peter Loshin, he gave the roughly idea of number of victims as 34,500. The breach was observed by the company in mid of June 2016 (Loshin 2016). Impact of attack All the customers who have purchased any product from the U.S. e-commerce website of Acer between May 12, 2015 and April 28, 2016 are suspected to be the victim of the hacking. It is believed that their personal data has been compromised which includes full names, home addresses, email addresses, Phone numbers, credit card numbers, Validation dates and even CVV numbers which could result in loss of money from the bank accounts of customers. No evidence has been found for login credentials being hacked such as username and passwords of clients and customers or of any employee (Matei 2016). Acer has asked its customers to keep a watch on their bank accounts and notify to the company in case any unauthorised activity observed. How was the attack carried out? Even though the company has not stated anything exact about the method used to carry out the attack and hack the website of the company, still the investigators are trying to build the scene of how the attack might be carried out (Stuart 2016). Investigators think that SQL injection is the one technique by which hackers might have manipulated the data out of Acers website. Websites have been vulnerable to this kind of attack in past also. The hacker announced publically through a blog that he already warned Acer in some manner about the bug bounty program which they should install but they didnt seem to care about it and hence the loss (Stuart 2016). Preventive Measures to stop further Attacks Acer has hired experts from the field of cyber-attacks and is investigating the attack. However the damage done already cannot be undone but it could be prevented in case any further attack takes place (Prabhu 2016). Groveunder, the spokesperson from Acer said that if the forms that have been filled by users to make a purchase would have been encrypted, then this type of mishap would havent take place at all. Acer gets major confidential data of clients on their website though fill-up forms and it is must for the company to have encryption techniques attached with the forms. Also various other measures could be taken to prevent these types of attacks Using SSL: Amidst companys database and website when the data transfer is taking place, the SSL protocol used to transfer the data which might be very confidential must pass through encryption (Prabhu 2016). Install a Web Application Firewall (WAF): It can be either software or hardware based firewall which sets amid data connection and companys website server and detects data which passes through it. The majority of WAFs coming in modern times is based on cloud. It blocks all the hacking attempts and even filters the undesired advertisements and spam mails. It is considered as one of the best way to avoid attack to the system (Keane 2016). Install Security Applications: Some free plugins are available online which adds an extra level of security to the website and it becomes difficult for hackers to attack the website for example Acunetix WP Security hides the identity of ones websites CMS and provides protection to it (Correa 2016). Conclusions The attack at Acers ecommerce website is another perfect example of cyber-crime and the presence of hackers into the network without a single clue of their presence (Keane 2016). The employees and other individuals need to be aware of every possible threat that could harm them or the company and should be very attentive to what is happening to their system. Hackers attacked the website for a whole year and no one was able to detect it, this shows the absence of awareness amongst its employees (Matei 2016). Part B Anthem medical data breach case 2015 Introduction Anthem Inc., an American Health Insurance company, is amongst nations largest health insurers and was in news for more than six months last year. Anthem Inc. suffered a major cyber-attack on Jan 29th, 2015, leaving millions of customers of the company threatened for their identity for the entire life span (Whitney 2015). Problem Statement Anthem Inc. suffered a major cyber-attack to its IT systems. The motive of the attackers was to get personal data of the clients of the Anthem Inc. The spokesperson of the company released the news about the attack and security breach on 4th Feb, 2015 (Mathews 2015). The investigators believed that the intruders hacked the system somewhere around mid-December 2014, and was continually hacking the information since then, till it was known. The spokesperson stated on 4th Feb, 2015 that companys servers and systems has been attacked and personal information of their former and present clients has been leaked which might be around 38 million. In another statement on 24th Feb, 2016 the toll rose to 79 million approx. as it was stated by a member of the company (Riley 2015). Impact of Attack Anthem breach case affected mostly to its clients who are either present members or were former members of any plans associated with the company. Along with them, some members who take Anthem served health services such as members of Blue cross and Blue Shield plans might have suffered too. Some individuals who were offered any Anthem or non-Anthem plans by their employers reported that they are the part of suffered victims as well (Abelson and Goldstein 2015). Hackers intrude into the system to steal personal identifiable information about the clients of Anthem for example email address, birthdates, full name, home address, employment information, social security number and people who are the victim of this attack might suffer their entire life span for the identity theft related problems ( Abelson and Creswellfeb 2015). The investigators did not found any clue regarding any information leak related to credit cards and bank accounts of anyone. Also no proof has been found for information leak related to medical information of the patient such as diagnostic codes, test results or claims (Abelson and Creswellfeb 2015).. How was the attack carried out? On 29th of January, 2015, an employee at Anthems Inc. noticed that system is running an unknown query, yet very complex. Employee checked for the same thinking that some other employee from the company might have run it for a job, but after checking he found that query had been run from some external environment and is resulting in loss of information. Immediately an alarm was raised and in minutes it was known in the company that they have suffered a crisis owing to major cyber-attack (Mathews and Yadron 2015). The team who investigated Anthems case stated that attackers might have sent an internal message to the employees which they make it as a mail from the company and employees got tricked to click to it and as soon someone might have clicked on it they gained access to the companys admin page and hacked the credentials of one of the administrator along with five other employees of the company. A news channel also stated in news that attackers of the Anthems case belongs to China and had planned the entire scenario from there only. (Terry 2015). Hackers could have used Windows, Java or any such other equipment which might have been proved helpful to them to chase out the data. This was not cleared that whether the employees whose credentials were used to theft data contains the one who raised the alarm. What could have been done to prevent the attack? Anthem suffered an attack which could have been done either by an insider i.e. an employee of the company or it might be the work of outsider by phishing employees of Anthem to explore data from them. For an employee its a very easy task as he could use own credentials to get the data and if it was the work of an outsider then he might have confused an employee by a mail which might have looked as if from known person. Whatsoever the case be, hackers already intruded into the walls of the companys website and whatever may the security measure be or firewalls, it would not have prevented the theft (Weise 2015). Anthem also got covered up in a debate that it happened due to failure to secure data using encryption techniques. Few stated that whether its on the wire or inside storage area Anthems database was never encrypted, which was very crucial for if the data had been encrypted using modern techniques hackers wouldnt have gained access to it without the keys and decryption technique. However, if the attacker is inside the company then encryption wouldnt have been a successful step at all as they have access to all the keys owing to job purposes, hence not the proper solution to the problem. In order to mitigate threats the three of the measures which could have been taken are: Context Aware Access Control: CAAC is related to the authentication of identity that whether the user who is logged in is the authenticated user or not. System checks for every authentication session that where it is coming from, what platform is being used, what is the date and time and similar other things. Now even if an intruder phishes to get login credentials of some employee he will not be able to make use of it as this authentication session would prevent it. Awareness: Cyber-attacks are very common nowadays and every day we come across one or the other news related to it. A proper attention should be given to this news that what method leads to the attack which could help anyone in future. Employees must be aware of what they are clicking at. Scam email campaigns are in very much trend now and one should be aware of that. Behavioural Analysis: The Company must maintain a track record of employees activity and should randomly compare it with other employees who are on same designation which could be achieved using automated system analysis and whenever a questioning activity observed, employees account must be suspended temporarily. Conclusions After the attack, a security system at Anthem has been tightened and they now know the importance of security and secured operating systems. In case, they would have taken these steps before, Anthem could have defeated the trial of attack or may be the suffered loss would have been little. References Correa, D. (2016).
